Abandoned Memories II - 2025 - 51" x 60" x 16"
slide film, thread
Installed in Denver, CO
This is the second in the Abandoned Memories series. This piece contains over 2500 slides. The slide film was salvaged from a property clean-out in 2017. The photographer, John Maxwell, Jr, took tens of thousands of photographs of trains. Most of his collection including slides, prints, negatives, drawings and research was donated to the Denver Public Library in 2018. Approximately 19 metal cases were diverted from the landfill and instead came into my possession. My attempts at reuniting the cases with John's family were unsuccessful.
I never met John while he was alive, but I've come to know him by handling each of the slides, first by removing them from the cardboard slide mounts and then examining them as I built the installation. It has been my honor to keep his legacy alive - although in a form he may never have imagined.
