This installation was commissioned by the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado for their Finding Home exhibit in 2018. The exhibit addressed housing shortages in the Denver metro area.

 

Notice to Quit spoke to the difficulty faced by buyers or renters seeking homes. Each house in the installation consists of a steel frame covered with legal documents such as leases, sales contracts, eviction notices and foreclosure notices. Unfired clay figurines were seated in the entryways of the houses. I created a game board with spaces illustrating documented obstacles faced by people seeking to rent or buy a home.

 

It was an interactive installation. Viewers were invited to spin the pointer on the game board. If they landed on a grey space, they were given a weight to hang on the front rail of one of the houses. The weight would cause the house to tip forward and the clay figure would fall to the ground and break. This illustrated the devastation people feel when they are unable to find housing or are evicted from their homes.
