One of the great loves in my life is paper.  I love the variety, the texture and the versatility of paper.  Asian papers are especially attractive to me because they all have a “story” - they come from remote places - they’re made from unusual materials - the “hand” of the paper-maker is evident in the body of the paper itself.

This work celebrates the versatility of Asian paper.  The paper is dyed, coated and then painted on.  It is translucent and quite tough, even though it looks very delicate.

A trip to the moody beaches of the eastern U.S. inspired this series.  Each piece is painted on Awagami paper - a Japanese paper with beautiful swirling fibers and a delicate off-white color.  I painted on the back of the paper which allows the fibers to become more visible.
